Soaked in buttermilk for 24hr then breaded with flour and panko. Texture of dark meat turkey and the flavor of lamb.

Unorthodox where I’m from, but that doesn’t look half bad! Is it similar to rabbit meat?

I’ve had deer, squirrel, rabbit, and various fowl growing up. I wish my mom (love you, mom) had known how to prepare these. It was never something I looked forward to. I could definitely give this a try.
Thank you for eating what you kill.

I’ve never had it fried. I’ll have to give it a try the next time I’m feeling ambitious enough to go hunt them lol. It’s been a long time.

Not shitty at all! After we fry them we put them back in the gravy.

I grew up eating squirrel because we were poor-poor (like we ate what we could grow or hunt, everything we owned was secondhand, and we didn’t have electricity or running water a lot of the time).
Back then it was not common at all (I got bullied for it, lol) but this is the third squirrel meal I have seen on reddit this month. Is this a recession indicator?

Good thing you took them out before they got you. It looks like the one on the right was holding a high-powered rifle

My paternal grandmother used to make this! The first time my mom had dinner at my dad’s house when they were dating, it was on the table. My mom thought it was fried chicken and was… taken aback. I’ve always been curious to try it but never had the chance.

Squirrel is great but needs to be prepped a certain way. Next time try tenderizing it a bit like you would with chicken cutlets if it’s a bit tough.

Realizing how different it was to grow up eating squirrel, rabbit, frog legs, and deer has been interesting for me.

My dad made it a few times, and it was always amazing.
Fresh shot out in rural forests, so not dumpster diving squirrels in the city or something, which I’m sure makes a difference.
Having had the good stuff, and seeing these pics, I would argue this doesn’t belong in this sub.
It reminds me of a cross between duck and rabbit. Very good when done right.

If it’s not barbecued on a homemade spit over a campfire, I don’t want it.

My dad was a squirrel hunter. He legit would have squirrel meat, squirreled (yes that was on purpose) away in the freezer for winter like people have venison. He loved it.

My great grandma used to make stewed squirrel. Underrated meat.

Is it tough? Ive only made it a few times and its always been tough for me. I’ve tried it on the bbq and pan fried plain. Does the buttermilk soak help to tenderize it?

First off, smash. Second, what’s with the call? I’m looking to get into small game to get out into the woods for more than a couple weeks a year and didn’t know you needed a call for squirrel. I figured finding an area with fresh acorns would be best?

My papa would slow roast his in the crockpot, always was one of my favorite meals growing up! Minus the occasional bite of birdshot that got missed, that is 💀

so good, you’ll try to stab folks going into your freezer to get the little squirrels for themselves…

Fuck the haters, this looks amazing. I grew up in Louisiana where squirrel is a perfectly acceptable meal. I’d consider it tame compared to raccoon.
